If Piaggio (the Vespa manufacturer) had published a children’s book back in the 50s, it would probably have looked like “Enrico’s Vespa”. Why? Because the prize-winning designer Elena Pongiglione has illustrated this book. She designed most of the official Vespa artwork for Piaggio in the 50s and 60s. Today, deep into the Internet Age and 50 years after the great era of commercial art at Piaggio, this children’s book recaptures the spirit of the legendary Italian scooters. On his father’s Vespa, Enrico sets out on a fantastic tour through Europe. He is joined by his sister Elena, the teddy bear Yo Yo, the cat Minou and the dog Wow Wow. “Enrico’s Vespa” is an exciting book for children and a collector’s piece for all parents.
This book also includes a board game and a cut-out sheet for the whole family featuring Enrico
and his friends.
Elena Pongiglione
Between 1956 and 1962 Professor Elena Pongiglione created almost all of the advertisement and artwork for Piaggio, until original art was replaced by photography. Her contribution was especially remarkable, because she was only 22 years old when she started out in 1956. The young designer had drawn Piaggio’s attention after winning some of Italy’s most prestigious art prizes. Back then, her position as chief commercial artist was a sensation. She was young, and she was a woman. This was too much even for some of the men in Piaggio’s advertisement
department, which is why later her signature often ”disappeared” from some of her works. Elena Pongiglione worked for Piaggio until its advertising department was incorporated into the Agnelli company (Fiat).
After leaving Piaggio, Elena Pongiglione went on to work for various companies as a graphic designer, winning numerous prizes and showing her work in exhibitions around the world.
We are honoured that Elena Pongiglione agreed to illustrate this extraordinary book. It gives us the chance to pay homage to her unique body of work.
No commercial artist has ever created more for the Piaggio company.
